Among the designations are the MAI (Member of the Appraisal Institute), CCIM (Commercial Investment Real Estate Institute), GRI & CRS (awarded by the National Association of Realtors), CRE (American Society of Real Estate Counselors), and CPM (Institute of Real Estate Management). Among other professional organizations are the Urban Land Institute (real estate development), the National Association of Homebuilders, Building Owners and Managers Association, Mortgage Bankers Association of America, International Council of Shopping Centers (shopping center development/leasing/management), National Association of Corporate Real Estate Executives, National Association of Real Estate Investment Tracts, and the Industrial Development Research Council (corporate real estate). The diversity of designations and organizations reflects the variety of career opportunities in real estate . Some components of the real estate business require licensure or certification. Negotiation of the sale or lease and, in some states, the management of the property of another, requires licensure. State certification or licensure also is required to appraise many properties. The real estate program at Ohio State is not designed to prepare the student for a specific career in real estate, although the student can acquire the educational prerequisites for licensure in Ohio as a salesperson or broker while completing the real estate major. The real estate program of study is intended to contribute to a successful career in any aspect of real estate . Program Educational Objectives At graduation, Fisher College of Business graduates: ? will possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and critically assess problems facing contemporary businesses. ? will demonstrate in-depth knowledge of Real Estate and Urban Analysis. ? will possess a global perspective and can critically evaluate the international context a contemporary business operates in. ? can identify and assess ethical issues surrounding business decisions. ? are able to work effectively in a team-based environment. ? can demonstrate professional deportment and effective oral and written communication skills. Co-Curricular Opportunities There are many opportunities for students in the Fisher College of Business to enrich and broaden their academic experience. Though internship and co-ops are not required for business students, 85% of students registered with Career Management have some kind of internship experience before they graduate. Many students receive an offer of full-time employment from their internship employer. In addition students are encouraged to explore other opportunities such as studying abroad. In coordination with the Fisher College of Business, the Office of International Affairs offers several undergraduate exchanges for students wishing to study abroad in countries around the world. Interested students may also become involved with the Real Estate Club, which exposes students to various real estate career areas through presentations by real state professionals. Students have received employment opportunities as a result of this networking with companies. Career Prospects in Real Estate & Urban Analysis The real estate major has opportunities for employment with commercial banks, savings associations, insurance companies, mortgage bankers, and private appraisal and consulting firms. Real estate developers, property management firms, and residential or commercial and industrial brokerage offices also offer employment. Students may find employment in corporate real estate departments, franchise organizations with multiple site requirements, and certain government agencies involved with lending. Many real estate graduates eventually organize their own businesses in one of these fields. There is a continuing need for employees in private firms and government agencies concerned with developing, appraising, financing, and merchandising residential, commercial, and industrial real estate. Career opportunities in real estate are expanded by the urbanization of our population and continued expansion of opportunities is expected. Salaries are largely determined by individual qualifications but are usually competitive with other professional business areas.
