PROGRAM OVERVIEW At ODU, Psychology majors combine coursework, research opportunities and experience in the field to address age -old questions about the psychological, biological and environmental influences on behavior as it relates to development, motivation, thinking and memory, learning, personality, social relationships, psychological disorders and counseling. KEY POINTS ABOUT THE ART MAJOR Students study psychological theories, their contribution to understanding human thought and behavior, and their application to promoting mental health, well-being, and performance. Students gain experience in the science of psychology as they develop skills in reviewing the literature, forming hypotheses, designing studies, collecting and analyzing data, and writing research reports. More than 95 percent of ODU Psychology students who apply to graduate school are accepted. Graduates are prepared for careers and are employed in the mental health profession as well as research and social services, business and industry. WHY ODU? Curriculum follows recommendations outlined by the American Psychological Association. Students have the opportunity to participate in their own research or in faculty work addressing child development or animal behavior. Many graduates are also employed in fields such as human resources, marketing, public relations and sales. Many graduates choose to continue their studies to the master or doctoral level. Ninety five percent of ODU psychology majors who apply to graduate school are accepted.
