PROGRAM OVERVIEW At the heart of ODU?s English program is great literature , which encompasses authors ranging from Chaucer to Shakespeare to Whitman to Morrison. Our program provides more than just a foundation in poetry, novels and drama; in-depth courses on specific authors such as Henry James and John Donne and exciting topics such as vampire novels and films, contemporary poetry, and murder mysteries give you an opportunity to engage with literature in ways you never imagined. English majors also hone skills that are essential for any career; you will become a stronger writer, a better reader, and a more effective critical thinker. KEY POINTS ABOUT THE ART MAJOR The distinguished curriculum also includes courses in contemporary, international, women?s, and minority literatures to reflect the changing dynamics of the written word. Poets, playwrights, and writers of fiction develop their talents in creative writing classes and have opportunities to be published in our literary journal, Gesture.
