This flexible curriculum incorporates emerging areas of biology; it also integrates these with traditional organismal studies. The laboratory facilities offer opportunities for hypothesis-driven experimentation which demands student initiative and creativity. Internships in the biological sciences or in medical or allied health fields are available during all semesters. In the senior year, students may pursue basic or applied research on campus. Opportunities for off-campus research are also available at local universities or research institutions. The Department of Biology offers preparation for medical, dental, veterinary, and graduate schools, and for secondary education teaching certification. The program also prepares students for employment opportunities in research laboratories, medical and government facilities, environmental fields, pharmaceutical companies, and other industries. Students can choose the Emphasis in Biotechnology , which will prepare them for immediate employment in the biotech industry or for graduate study in bio-tech related fields. Students completing the emphasis take additional courses and gain professional experience with a practicum at a local biotechnology laboratory.
