Transportation Systems Analysis and Planning from Northwestern University is a Campus Master Land Transport degree that prepares you for a Transportation career. The Master of Science degree prepares the student to identify, analyze and solve transportation problems. Educational components develop the students\' knowledge of transportation systems, modes and institutions and enhance their quantitative skills in operations research, economics and statistics. Building each student\'s ability to integrate quantitative skills and transportation knowledge is a fundamental goal of the Master of Science program. The program requires completion of twelve approved courses including research and independent studies. Courses are normally taken over three consecutive quarters beginning in the Fall. They typically include six or seven courses in transportation; two or three courses in quantitative methods such as operations research, statistics, econometrics, and computer science; and two or three courses in allied disciplines such as economics, finance, marketing, and political science. Individual programs of study are tailored to each student\'s background and interests. Students select a topic of interest for their Master of Science thesis in collaboration with the faculty. The thesis introduces students to research techniques such as problem formulation, literature review, identification and application of solution methods, testing the approach, and seeking generalizable conclusions. The length of the research period varies from three to six months beyond the completion of course work.
