Stage Design from Northwestern University is a Campus Master Theatre degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. About the Program The MFA in Stage Design Program prepares a select group of scenery, costume, and lighting designers for professional careers in the American and international theatre and related design fields. The program emphasizes intensive collaboration between designers and directors, rigorous analysis of texts, the development of classical studio art skills, thorough research, and a fervent effort to nurture unique artistic voices. We believe that passionate, insightful artists immersed in a team-based environment will generate bold, compelling theatrical work. Through a uniquely structured curriculum, students in the program interact with those in the Master of Fine Arts in Directing program. In the first two years, directors and designers participate together in four classes to develop collaborative relationships, interpersonal skills, and the methods of script interpretation and research unique to directors and designers and essential to the development of a strong visual response to a play. Over the second and third years, directors and designers work in teams designing productions in a variety of performance spaces. Five full-time professional designers serve as faculty and provide the program?s vision and guidance. Adjunct faculty from the Chicago professional theatre community also teach in the program. Along with four theatres , the Theatre and Interpretation Center also houses production shop facilities. These include spaces for traditional woodworking, metalworking, and plastics; a costume shop with a fully equipped dye room and crafts area; and a lighting shop, which supports production for each of the theatres . A practical lighting laboratory is available for classes and for lighting designers assigned to a production in the Center. A professional staff headed by a production manager and 13 technicians working in all areas provide experienced supervision and educational support for productions designed by the MFA students.
