Learning Disabilities from Northwestern University is a Campus Master Special Education degree that prepares you for a Education career. The Master\'s Program in Learning Disabilities at Northwestern is unique in several ways. First, reflecting our historical roots as one of the first programs of this type in the world, we are located in the School of Communication rather than in Special Education . Hence our focus is much broader than academic achievement per se, and considers all areas of language and learning as forms of communication. Second, links between theory, research and practice are emphasized throughout the entire program of study. From the beginning, students have numerous opportunities to observe and participate in on-campus diagnostic and remedial activities in our Speech, Language, and Learning Clinics. Third, the Master\'s Program in Learning Disabilities includes both lecture courses and clinical practicums addressing all areas of achievement (including oral language, reading, written language, mathematics and non-verbal behavior) as well as social functioning and various cognitive processes (such as attention, visual and auditory perception, memory and conceptualization). Fourth, the Northwestern curriculum takes a lifespan perspective on learning disabilities and includes content related to typical and atypical development from the early childhood years, through adolescence and intro adulthood. The number of students in the program is relatively small so that many opportunities to work closely with faculty are possible ? Northwestern University provides a remarkably vibrant, intellectual atmosphere that affords students a diverse set of options outside of the classroom. They may choose to observe in other clinics, attend lectures by internationally-known scientists and clinicians, or participate in some of the many research projects that are being conducted throughout the department, among many other options. Our nationally prominent faculty members actively investigate both basic and applied questions pertaining to a wide range of language, learning and behavior problems. As a result, current trends within the field of special education are continually integrated in class discussions. While engaging in clinical practice, student-clinicians are guided to use evidence-based practices that are upheld by quality and thorough research. Professional Opportunities Upon completion of the master\'s degree , students are prepared to participate in multi-disciplinary diagnostic teams, provide remedial services for children, adolescents, and adults with language, learning and behavior problems, and work collaboratively with other professionals, teachers and parents. Recent graduates of the masters program have gone on to: teach children with learning disabilities in a resource room of a public school assess and teach children in the classroom of a private school work with a clinical psychologist in a private clinic provide private instruction for children and adults with learning disabilities work within a hospital clinic setting provide tutoring and accommodative services at a private college conduct research into causes and treatments of learning disabilities develop standardized tests that are used in the assessment of learning disabilities Other past graduates of the program have pursued advanced study in a range of fields, including special education , psychology, social work and medicine.
