Purpose NCU offers a master of arts degree in school counseling , which trains students to become successful school counselors in K-12 public or private schools . The program is accredited by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) in conjunction with the Oregon Educational Act for the 21st Century. Together with a Christian frame of reference and Christian faculty, this program provides students with a solid foundation of counseling skills and theories to promote the academic, social, and emotional development of children based on current research. Building upon that base, students learn to develop a comprehensive school counseling program and a professional identity as a school counselor that reflects their values as to the welfare of children, quality of academic performance, and safety in schools. Additionally, students individualize their own program through choices of topics on papers and presentations in their required coursework and through choice of authorization level (early childhood/elementary or middle level/high school) and internship site. Program Objectives Upon completion of the Master of Arts in School Counseling Program, candidates will be able to: develop and implement plans that promote social and emotional development; establish programs appropriate for group, individual, and family counseling; demonstrate interpersonal communication skills in relationships with colleagues, counselees and community members; practice and promote group process, crisis resolution, anger management, and violence prevention; demonstrate ethical standards and knowledge of legal frameworks unique to counseling; collaborate with social service agencies providing services to students and families; support school-to-work transition and career planning; assist with curriculum coordination as it relates to guidance activities; understand student assessment as it relates to academic, career counseling , and personal/social development; assist with goal setting, learning skills, and the development of self-directed learners; support and develop plans that respect differences and promote communication among diverse groups; collaborate with school staff, families, and community members to meet individual student needs; assist staff to understand the needs of all students; and demonstrate effective counseling techniques for individuals and small groups View more details on Northwest Christian University .
