In addition students learn how to apply classical techniques to natural and synthetic samples in order to characterize the world around us. In the classroom, students develop a sound theoretical basis for understanding a wide range of important processes ranging from atmospheric deposition to the fate and transport of environmental pollutants and from green synthetic chemistry to the biochemical mechanisms of toxicity. Coursework in geology, biology, mathematics, and physics provides context and preparation for application of chemistry to the interdisciplinary issues inherent in the study of environmental issues.
