Music History and Analysis from Northeastern University is a Campus Bachelor Music and Instruments degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. This concentration focuses on music history and analysis. The diverse curriculum includes courses in Western classical music, American music , World music, music theory , as well as a capstone course emphasizing independent research. This concentration is designed to reflect the musical diversity available to us today. Accordingly, the five required history courses include American music, World music , Western classical music through 1900, and Western music from Stravinsky to the Present. Each of these areas is supported by electives. The final capstone course involves archival research and writing for publication. Such publication includes writing program notes for concerts and/or articles for on-line or print media. What do students do with this degree? This question is often asked of the music history faculty. We stress writing skills and critical thinking. These are transferable skills. They are necessary and desirable all across the music industry ???particularly in marketing and public relations, whether the workplace is a record company or a symphony orchestra. Some of our students go on to graduate programs in historical musicology and ethnomusicology. Others work for a diverse range of music businesses.
