Objectives of the Curriculum The Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management focuses on the dynamic and growing tourism industry. Tourism and Hospitality Management is a multidisciplinary area of specialization offered under the auspices of the BS degree . Unlike other specializations in which students concentrate in one functional area of business, this specialization concentrates upon orienting the student toward applying business principles to a specific industry. The program requires course work from various departments within the School of Business, as well as from other areas within the University. The mission of the Hospitality Management Program is to educate and train students through the use of theory-based instruction and practical experience to assume leadership roles in a challenging and changing global hospitality environment. All students must first complete the general education, and business requirements of the BS. Following this, the specialization includes advanced courses in the nature and functioning of the tourism and hospitality industry as well as courses dealing with the unique management, marketing, legal, financial, and human resource aspects of the industry. In addition, courses relating to the fundamentals of tourism are required to expose students to a major aspect of the hospitality industry. Finally, each student before graduation must fulfill all requirements for an internship and senior project. The objectives of our curriculum are: To prepare students for an entry-level management position in the hospitality industry. To prepare students to apply business principles in all aspects of the tourism industry such as cruise ships, food service, restaurant, and hotel/resort management segments. To provide students with insight, guidance, training and sensitivity to the multi-cultural and global nature of the industry workforce and the public served. To instill in students the service nature of the hospitality industry with a focus on the internal customer (the employee) as the key to effecting external customer loyalty and profitability.
