Purpose Our school offers Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Master Degree programs that will provide a comprehensive professional education in acupuncture and Oriental medicine that, combined with instruction in biomedicine, prepares graduates to practice in a wide range of clinical settings. The programs emphasize an integrative and holistic approach to healthcare. Educational Objectives Graduates of the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Programs will: Be able to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, and be able to apply theory to clinical practice; Be able to use Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment and diagnostic techniques in order to develop treatment plans for patients with a diverse range of medical conditions, and to help patients maintain and enhance wellness and vitality; Be able to utilize acupuncture, moxibustion and, as appropriate, Chinese herbal medicine as primary treatment modalities, as well as incorporate into practice elements of tuina, nutritional counseling, Tai Ji Chuan and Qi Gong exercise and breathing techniques, and other related modalities; Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of the historical and philosophical foundations of Oriental medicine, as well as the diversity of Oriental medical theories and clinical approaches; Be conversant with biomedical terminology, pharmacology, diagnostic procedures, and conventional treatment options in order to communicate effectively with patients and other healthcare practitioners, as well as make timely and appropriate referral for emergency conditions and conditions not readily treatable by Oriental medicine; Be able to practice integratively and collaboratively in a wide range of healthcare settings, including hospitals and multidisciplinary clinics, and to work safely and effectively with patients; Be able to describe basic scientific research methodology, and to demonstrate the ability to critically assess research literature in acupuncture and Oriental medicine; Be able to demonstrate knowledge of the ethical, legal and professional requirements of licensed acupuncture practice; Be able to demonstrate the practice management skills necessary for entering practice. Master of Science Degree in Acupuncture (MSA) 120 credit (2,265 contact hour) program Covers theory, history and philosophy of Oriental medicine Extensive training in Oriental medicine pattern differentiation and diagnosis Extensive clinical training focusing on the application of acupuncture treatment, including ? - practical skills instruction - clinical observation & assistantship - year-long clinical internship under guidance of expert practitioners All aspects of Oriental medicine modalities are taught, including ? - Tuina (Asian bodywork) - Qi Gong (Qi cultivation techniques) - Moxibustion, Gua Sha, and other adjunctive techniques - Eastern Dietary Therapy Comprehensive biomedicine education including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and western clinical medicine. Anatomy courses include time in our campus cadaver labs. Emphasis of the program also includes effective practice management, and understanding of scientific research.
