Educational Objectives Graduates of the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Programs will: Be able to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, and be able to apply theory to clinical practice; Be able to use Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment and diagnostic techniques in order to develop treatment plans for patients with a diverse range of medical conditions, and to help patients maintain and enhance wellness and vitality; Be able to utilize acupuncture, moxibustion and, as appropriate, Chinese herbal medicine as primary treatment modalities, as well as incorporate into practice elements of tuina, nutritional counseling, Tai Ji Chuan and Qi Gong exercise and breathing techniques, and other related modalities; Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of the historical and philosophical foundations of Oriental medicine, as well as the diversity of Oriental medical theories and clinical approaches; Be conversant with biomedical terminology, pharmacology, diagnostic procedures, and conventional treatment options in order to communicate effectively with patients and other healthcare practitioners, as well as make timely and appropriate referral for emergency conditions and conditions not readily treatable by Oriental medicine; Be able to practice integratively and collaboratively in a wide range of healthcare settings, including hospitals and multidisciplinary clinics, and to work safely and effectively with patients; Be able to describe basic scientific research methodology, and to demonstrate the ability to critically assess research literature in acupuncture and Oriental medicine; Be able to demonstrate knowledge of the ethical, legal and professional requirements of licensed acupuncture practice; Be able to demonstrate the practice management skills necessary for entering practice. Master of Science Degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MSAOM) 164 credit (3,060 contact hour) program Encompasses entirety of MSA program training Additional training focused on the practice and application of Chinese herbal medicine, including ? o study of individual medicinal agents & herbal formulas o further training in pattern differentiation, diagnosis, and application of herbal therapy o practical training in herb dispensary management and herb preparation o training related to herb safety, toxicity and herb/drug interactions Additional training focusing on the clinical application of Chinese herbal medicine, including ? o clinical observation & assistantship courses that involve training and hours working in the medicinal herb dispensary o extensive clinical internship training thoroughly incorporating application of herbal medicine with patients in a variety of clinical settings o extensive training in application of raw herb formulas, granular herb mixtures, and prepared herb products This program is ideal for students interested in a comprehensive education in Oriental medicine that includes Chinese herbal medicine, or for those individuals planning to apply for licensure in a state requiring training in herbal medicine.
