The Microbiology core curriculum is appropriate for graduate students who wish to specialize in areas of biology that study the various processes that occur in microbes (bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists) such as their physiology, ecology, development or evolution. Master degree seeking students are expected to choose three, 400-level courses and at least two 500 or 600-level courses to fulfill the microbiology emphasis. PhD degree seeking students are expected to choose two 400-level courses, 2-500 level courses, and 1-600 level course. Presentation of at least one formal seminar (i.e., an Exit Seminar) is expected. Other courses from other disciplines (Ecology/Evolution or Cell/Organismal) can be substituted for these courses, depending on the direction of the thesis project and input from the committee.
