FIRST YEAR HEBREW GRAMMAR - Learn the basics of Hebrew grammar, translate the book of Esther and portions of Deuteronomy, and learn how to use Hebrew language tools. SECOND YEAR HEBREW READING - Translation and basic exegetical study from one of the following sequences: 2010-11 Exodus (Fall); Proverbs and selected Psalms (Spring) 2011-12 I Samuel (Fall); Minor Prophets (Spring) 2012-13 Genesis (Fall); Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, and selected Psalms (Spring) HEBREW EXEGESIS SEMINAR - Translation and close analysis and exegesis of one of the following sequences: 2010-11 Isaiah 1-39 (Fall); Isaiah 40-66 (Spring) 2011-12 Deuteronomy (Fall); O.T. Legal Texts (Spring) 2012-13 Kings (Fall); Chronicles (Spring) ADVANCED GRAMMAR & COMPOSITION (FALL) - Advanced study of Hebrew morphology, grammar, syntax with composition of narrative and poetry from English into Hebrew. ISSUES IN EXEGESIS (SPRING) - Textual criticism, comparative philology, literary theory applied to the analysis of biblical texts. ARAMAIC (FALL 2011, 2013) - Translation of all the Aramaic sections in the Hebrew Bible as well as selections from ancient inscriptions, Elephantine papyri, and Targums. EXTRABIBLICAL HEBREW SEMINAR (SPRING 2012, 2014) - Survey of Jewish interpretation of the Hebrew Bible as seen in the Dead Sea Scrolls, Targums, Midrash, Talmud, and medieval rabbinic commentators. Special focus is given to texts relevant to the study of the New Testament. What can you do with a background in biblical languages? Personal understanding of the Bible - The majority of students use their training to gain personal insight into the biblical text and to enhance their ministry. Bible Translation - Some students go on to work with organizations like Wycliffe Bible Translators. Teaching on the college level - Some graduate degrees in preparation for careers in teaching.
