Nursing from Mountain State University is a Online Bachelor Registered Nurse degree that prepares you for a Nursing career. The nursing program consists of a concentration in nursing science along with general studies, including the humanities and the natural and social sciences. Clinical practice components place students in such settings as hospitals, health departments, clinics, nursing homes, and doctors' offices, providing them with an opportunity to improve their application of nursing theory and skills. In addition to the traditional B.S.N. program, three pathway options are available: one for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), one for RNs who are graduates of diploma or associate degree programs, and one for those who already hold a bachelor's degree in another field. Graduates are prepared for entry-level nursing positions with the potential for advancement into leadership positions or graduate study. The program is accredited by the West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses and by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (61 Broadway, New York NY 10006, tel. 212.363.5555). Program graduates are eligible to apply for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). Successful performance on the NCLEX-RN is required for licensure as a nurse. Other eligibility requirements vary by state; students are responsible for ascertaining that they meet eligibility requirements for the state in which they wish to practice. All boards of nurse examiners, including the West Virginia Board of Examiners, have the right to deny admission to an exam or to refuse licensure if an individual has not met all requirements. The West Virginia Board of Examiners may deny admission if an applicant (1) is or has been guilty of fraud or deceit in procuring a license to practice; (2) has been convicted of a felony; (3) is unfit or incompetent by reason of negligence, habits, or other causes; (4) is addicted to the use of habit-forming drugs; (5) is mentally incompetent or (6) is guilty of conduct derogatory to the morals or standards of the profession; (7) is practicing or attempting to practice as a registered professional nurse without a license or registration; or (8) has willfully or repeatedly violated any of the provisions of licensing law.* Nursing students must comply with the standards for professional nursing practice as stated in the Legislative Rules of the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses (19-10-1). *State of West Virginia Code and Legislative Rules for Registered Professional Nurses, 2002 (9). Traditional Nursing Program Application and Admission Nursing program admission is selective and competitive, with students admitted directly to the program as freshmen. Acceptance to the University and meeting the nursing program requirements do not guarantee admission. Criteria for acceptance include: ACT cumulative score of at least 20 High school GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale One high school course with a grade of C or better in each of the following subjects: algebra, biology, and one laboratory science Other measures may be considered or required. Applicants' academic records, particularly in the natural sciences, behavioral sciences, and mathematics, are a major factor in admissions decisions. Applicants who do not meet the above requirements may be accepted on a provisional basis. To be considered for provisional acceptance, applicants must have an ACT cumulative score of at least 20 or a college GPA of at least 2.5 on a scale of 4.0 (college GPA must be based on at least 15 credit hours, including at least 6 hours in math and/or science with a minimum grade of C). For provisionally admitted students, progression to the sophomore level requires a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better and a minimum grade of C or P in all classes. Those who are required to complete developmental courses may be unable to complete the program in four years. For all students, enrollment in sophomore nursing classes requires the completion of a physical examination form by a licensed health care provider, including certification that the student is able to function in the job of a registered professional nurse and has all required immunizations. Students must have current CPR certification (health care provider) and health insurance, and must pass a drug screening and criminal background check. Admission to the nursing program is selective and competitive. The program begins in the fall semester with a limited number of seats. Qualified applicants are considered for the next upcoming class until it is filled. Applicants are responsible for providing all documentation of their qualifications. Transfer Applicants Applicants transferring from another college or changing majors within the University will be evaluated primarily on their previous college experience. These applicants must meet basic admission requirements for the University and the nursing program, including the ACT score. All transfer students must have a grade of C or better in all nursing , mathematics, natural sciences, and psychology courses, as well as in two terms of English composition. Nursing program transfer applicants must submit official transcripts to the Admissions Office and provide descriptions of any transfer courses with which they wish to fulfill program requirements to the director of the nursing program. These courses (with a minimum grade of C) are evaluated and a determination made by the nursing faculty. Students transferring from another nursing program must also submit a letter from their current program director stating that they are in good standing. Transfer students must complete a minimum of 24 credit hours in nursing at Mountain State University , including at least two clinical laboratory courses, to be eligible for graduation from the program. Program Requirements The program requires a minimum passing grade of C in all nursing courses except clinical lab courses, which are graded on a pass/fail basis. Students must earn simultaneous passing grades in corequisite courses and sections to progress to the next level. Those who receive a failing grade (less than C or P) in a lecture or lab corequisite must repeat both corequisites with passing grades before they can progress to the next level of coursework. Students may repeat nursing courses in which they earn a W or a grade of less than C only once, and may repeat a total of only two nursing courses before dismissal from the program. Failure to register for nursing courses within one academic year of the last completed nursing course will also result in dismissal from the program. Repeating a nursing course requires submission of an Intent to Return form. If more than a year has lapsed since the completion of the last nursing course, previous nursing courses may have to be repeated. Students dismissed from the program may petition the program for readmission. Readmission is not guaranteed, and each student may apply for readmission only once. Students who wish to be considered for readmission must submit a readmission application by April 1 for fall semester and by December 1 for spring. Readmitted students who receive a W or a grade less than C or P in any nursing course are permanently dismissed from the program. All required nursing courses must be completed within six years of initial registration for NURS 211/211L/211B Basic Concepts of Nursing . Students who interrupt their program of study in nursing for any reason will be required to meet the requirements of the Mountain State University catalog at the time of their re-enrollment.
