Sport today is a significant and pervasive aspect of our society: in response to this demand, the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration program in Sport Management is designed to develop in the student the skills and knowledge necessary to become an effective business professional within the industry. The program offers an integrated approach to learning that includes core teachings in business, the All College Curriculum, and sport-specific classes. Through this blended approach to education, the Sport Management major is prepared with transferable skills and perspectives from a variety of academic disciplines that allow him/her to remain flexible and responsive to the demands of the industry and to apply best practice in management challenges. Students will be required to select and complete required coursework for one of the following professional concentrations: Event/Facility Management, Coaching or Sport Marketing and Communication. Career and/or Graduate Study Options Students with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Sport Management degree can work in a variety of activities, businesses and organizations related to sport , fitness and recreation. Sport managers can be employed in professional, collegiate and amateur sport organizations as well as social agencies, industrial and military programs. Corporations, sport consulting and marketing firms are also sites for employment. Students can also pursue a graduate degree in sport management, management or business administration . Learning Objectives In addition to the All College Curriculum skills and perspective, students who successfully complete this program will: Meet the needs of the contemporary sport industry nationally and globally; Recognize the cultural influences that shape sport on the social and psychosocial levels which impact individual and group performance; Apply management theory within the sport setting and understand leadership as it relates to management success; Develop a personal philosophy regarding social responsibility in the sport management setting; Apply fundamental marketing concepts to sport management tasks; Develop a variety of communication skills to deal effectively with others; Be familiar with budget development and financial control to include methods and principles as they relate to industry needs; Understand economic principles and apply them to sport nationally and globally; Be familiar with the governing agencies of sport organizations to include their authority, function and structure; Be familiar with those legal concepts that are commonly applied within the sport industry; Develop practical skills from a sequence of practica in the sophomore and junior year, culminating in an in-depth fifteen-week internship upon the completion of 80 credits and senior standing.
