Spanish Teaching from Morningside College is a Campus Bachelor Teaching degree that prepares you for a Education career. The main objective of the Department of Modern Languages is to facilitate the acquisition and understanding of other languages and cultures for Morningside students. Presently the Department offers a major in Spanish Teaching. Introductory courses in other languages are offered occasionally. At Morningside College , we consult the guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) to determine levels of competence in communication (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). Each of the courses in the Spanish curriculum relates to one or more of the standards prescribed by the national Standards for Foreign Language Learning. Furthermore, this curriculum reflects an internal consistency with the Department?s Mission Statement and manner of assessment by skills testing and by portfolio. Recognizing that the interest of the majority of students of Spanish at the college lies within the Latin American community rather than within the Spanish-peninsular community, the Bachelor of Arts in Spanish channels resources to offer the strongest possible program in the area of greater relevance to our students: Latin America. Spanish-peninsular content retains a presence in our curriculum, however, because of the historical and cultural heritage in Spanish America. Our curriculum provides a diverse foundation for the study of Spanish with rigor, depth, and breadth. A student graduating with a major in Spanish will: 1. Communicate orally and in writing in Spanish at the advanced level according to the guidelines of ACTFL. 2. Gain functional knowledge and understanding of Hispanic cultures. 3. Connect the language, cultures, and literatures of Hispanic peoples to academic and personal experiences. 4. Develop insight into the nature of language and culture. 5. Participate in Spanish-speaking communities at home and around the world. View more details on Morningside College .
