The Department of Civil Engineering provides a comprehensive graduate program offering M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, and a Master of Construction Engineering Management degree. At the doctorate level the College of Engineering grants a Ph.D. degree in Engineering with specialization in either applied mechanics or environmental engineering. the department has approximately 25 faculty members supporting specialized study in engineering mechanics, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering , transportation engineering, environmental engineering , water resources engineering, and construction management. Research A variety of interesting research is performed, often involving laboratory and field studies in conjunction with computational analysis. A sampling of current research includes: snow and ice mechanics; geosynthetic applications for roadways; seismic capacity of bridge foundations; the use of non-conventional concrete mixtures as structural materials; intelligent transportation systems; recycled pavements; reconstructed wetlands; and the effects of wastewater applications on soil physics. Research in the areas of industrial water and wastewater systems, drinking water, bioremediation and microbial fouling control is performed by faculty with joint appointments to MSU\\\'s Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE) and Civil Engineering Department.
