Legal Studies from Missouri Western State University is a Campus Bachelor Law degree that prepares you for a Legal career. While lawyers assume ultimate responsibility for legal work, they often delegate many of their tasks to paralegals. One of a paralegal's most important tasks is helping lawyers prepare for trials, appeals, and corporate meetings. Paralegals investigate the facts of cases and ensure that all relevant information is considered. They also identify appropriate laws, judicial decisions, legal articles, and other materials that are relevant to assigned cases. After they analyze and organize the information, paralegals may prepare written reports that attorneys use in determining how cases should be handled.* Paralegals cannot practice law. Only attorneys, who are licensed in the state by the Supreme Court, can practice law. MWSU Criminal Justice and Legal Studies Department The Department's mission is to provide a high quality education which includes the knowledge, skills, critical thinking, and applied learning that will prepare students to succeed in professional careers in criminal justice and legal studies or pursue graduate education in their chosen field. Every professor in the department has experience in the criminal justice field, and Legal Studies professors are all licensed attorneys. The Legal Studies program is approved by the American Bar Association. We have the only ABA approved program at a public institution in Missouri. Our Legal Assistant program is also a charter member of the American Association for Paralegal Education. Career Opportunities Legal assistants, or paralegals, are employed by law firms, corporate legal departments and various government offices. They may specialize in many different areas of the law.
