Te Art Program is equipped to support all facets of the art curriculum. Te Johnston Gallery exhibits the works of students, faculty, and artists from various communities throughout the world. The freshman year experience in the Art Program serves to heighten the students' visual awareness and enhance their capacity for creative problem solving and visual expression. In the freshman year, students are confronted with problems and exercises where they engage in drawing, three-dimensional design, two dimensional design , and color mixing and coordination processes. Te frst year coursework thus enhances the students' capabilities to successfully complete upper level coursework. The focus of the remaining three years of the program is upon establishing a student's personal direction and mode of artistic expression. Tis will mean choosing between Visual Communication, which focuses primarily on the use of computer programs for the creation of designs for commercial applications and Two Dimensional Design , which enables students to explore a variety of concepts, processes, and media for the purpose of enhancing their ability to express themselves as visual artists in a variety of venues. Most of the coursework involves profciency in the use of a variety of traditional art media for personal expression. However, certain electives will give Two Dimensional majors opportunity to explore art using computer technology. The Art History area complements all facets of the program by providing an orientation in the historical signifcance as well as the conceptual and theoretical basis of the visual arts. It enables the students to efectively articulate their work and to relate their work to the culture as a whole. The studios for making art are spacious and provide students with ample opportunity to do advanced work in a variety of visual arts disciplines: drawing, painting, ceramics, photography, printmaking, and computer graphics. Te painting and drawing studios are adequate for hands on confronting the challenges of employing traditional painting and drawing media in the creation of works of art while developing a personal mode of expression. Te computer lab is fully equipped and enables students to acquire skills related to the applications to the creation of commercial art. Te ceramics studio is fully equipped and capable of handling all phases of clay work including wheel throwing, hand building, glazing, and firing. The printmaking studio provides students with an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of both photography and printmaking. A fully equipped darkroom contains enlargers, flm processing equipment, and a silkscreen-exposing unit. A computer is available for students to explore creative photographic techniques in a digital format. Te printmaking area is equipped with a silkscreen washer and silkscreen printing area. Tere is also a Conrad etching press along with a hote plate, which accommodates plates up to 24x30 inches. A Conrad lithography press, which accommodates stone and plates up to 24x30 inches, is also in the studio. Goals Te University recognizes the fact that career preparation in the arts requires a highly specialized education that must involve personal studio experience as well as dedicated faculty.
