Description The purpose of the Department of English and Foreign Languages is multi-faceted because of its different programs. Te Department's general education courses are designed to develop critical thinking, writing, and speaking skills and also to acquaint students with the aesthetic and cultural values inherent in literature. The English major program teaches the traditional canon of English and American literature and languages (1) as a body of knowledge to be mastered, (2) as a means of reinforcing literature's aesthetic and cultural values, and (3) as a means of refning thinking, writing, and researching skills. Te program has expanded its literature offerings beyond the conservative, traditional spectrum to include multi-cultural literature. Goals To provide all students in the University with basic courses in composition, proficiency writing, and world literature; To prepare future teachers of English for middle and high schools; To prepare students for graduate study in English and related fields; To develop in students analytical and communication abilities in the study of English language and literature; To provide general knowledge necessary in a multi-cultural and technological world; and To develop in students skills in foreign languages and computer literacy.
