Philosophy Bachelor from Mississippi State University details

Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

Philosophy from Mississippi State University is a Campus Bachelor Philosophy degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. Welcome to the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Mississippi State University! We\\\'re a dynamic, active group of philosophers and religion scholars, with research and teaching strengths in philosophy of the life and cognitive sciences, applied ethics, recent Continental thought, the history of philosophy , the Christian and Hindu religious traditions, and the interactions of science and religion. Every faculty member pursues an active research program, which informs his or her teaching with up-to-date results and topics. This is an exciting time in the long history of philosophy and religious studies. Both disciplines have grown self-consciously \\\"interdisciplinary\\\" over the past few decades, and the philosophers and religious scholars that compose our department specialize in a number of these fields that cross multiple disciplinary boundaries (neuroscience, biology, medicine, cultural studies, politics). Philosophy and Religious Studies as academic subjects address head-on the deepest and most profound questions of human existence-questions that human beings have grappled with for pretty much as long as there have been human beings, and that intelligent people have addressed systematically for more than two-and-a-half millennia. What distinguishes genuine knowledge from mere opinion? Do I freely choose to perform any of my actions, or are they all just the end result of prior causes operating according to determining forces, ultimately beyond my control (genes, environment, neurochemicals)? Will my conscious mind survive the death of my physical body and nervous system? How do the basic tenets of the world\\\'s major religions compare and contrast with one another? Are ethical standards relative to culture or historical periods, or do at least some ethical standards apply to the actions of all people, in all cultures, at all times? How can we best resolve the ethical dilemmas that new technologies-medical, communications, security-inevitably raise? Do science and religion genuinely conflict with each other, and if so, how should we resolve those conflicts? These are just some of the engrossing questions that philosophers and religion scholars confront, in their research and in their classrooms. View more details on Mississippi State University .
