Chemistry from Millsaps College is a Campus Bachelor Chemistry degree that prepares you for a Science career. Chemistry, often defined as the \\\"central science,\\\" prepares a student for success in many science related occupations. A career in chemistry will provide you with the opportunity to contribute in many areas such as medicine, the environment, manufacturing, polymers, safety and law enforcement. Students can enter the teaching profession or industry directly or pursue additional study for advanced degrees in chemistry, biochemistry or one of the health professions (Medical, Dental School, etc.). Most chemists are involved in either research and development, production or teaching. The number one employer of chemists in the chemical industry with 60% of the chemistry graduates. Almost 24% of chemistry graduates teach at either the high school or college level. Federal, state and local government agencies hire almost 10% of the chemistry graduates for work in areas such as medical, forensic, biochemical and environmental studies. The Chemistry Curriculum As a chemistry major, you will be required to take a core of courses in chemistry, physics and mathematics; if you are planning graduate study in the medical area, you will be encouraged to take the recommended courses in biology. The chemistry curriculum at Millsaps is guided by the recommendations of the American Chemical Society and the department has designed its major to meet the needs of two types of students: Those who plan to pursue a career in a field of chemistry Those who need a strong background in chemistry to pursue a successful career in fields such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, etc. The ACS certified major is designed for the student who wished to pursue a professional career in chemistry. The general chemistry major is designed for the student who wishes to use chemistry as a background for other career interests such as the health professions. The basic requirements for all majors include General Inorganic, Organic,and Physical Chemistry, Quantitative Analysis, Chemical Separations, Organic Spectral Analysis, Literature of Chemistry - Senior Seminar.
