About the Program The Psychology Department offers a Master of Education degree in Professional Counseling with concentrations in Mental Health Counseling and in School Counseling . The Mental Health Counseling (MHC) program prepares students to work in mental health settings with children, adolescents, and their parents. Students who complete the program will have met the educational requirements for licensure as professional counselors with mental health service provider designation (LPC MHSP), the highest level of licensure for counselors in the state of Tennessee. The MHC program is modeled according to standards set forth by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, the accrediting body of the American Counseling Association. The program in School Counseling prepares students to work in schools in all grade levels with the potential for recommendation for licensure in the state of Tennessee as a school counselor , PreK-12. The School Counseling program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP), an accrediting body of the American Counseling Association. The program is also accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). MTSU has a strong, growing Psychology Department with 45 full-time faculty members and seven graduate concentrations. The department maintains and operates the Psychological Services Center, an on-campus facility in which professional counseling graduate students provide counseling services to community residents as part of their practicum experience.
