Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest of the engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineers research, develop, analyze, design, manufacture, and test tools, engines, machines, other mechanical devices and systems, and the generation and conversion of power. They must understand and apply math, science, and engineering science. They must be able to research concepts and apply modeling methods, to simulate and test working conditions and their impact on the designed systems, and to synthesize different elements in order to obtain the optimum design of a specific product or system. Computers assist mechanical engineers by accurately and efficiently performing computations and by aiding the design process by permitting the modeling and simulation of new designs. Mechanical engineers also incorporate computers into the functionality of their designs. According to U.S. Department of Labor, employment of mechanical engineers is projected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations though 2010. Emerging technologies in information technology, biotechnology, and nanotechnology will create new job opportunities for mechanical engineers. What are the features of Miami's program? Opportunity to double major The number of common courses allows students to double major in mechanical and manufacturing engineering with only one additional semester. Top-notch facilities The Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Department offers laboratory experiences that deal with mechanical engineering topics such as: CAD/CAM, robotics, computer graphics, computer-controlled manufacturing systems, statistical process control, microprocessors, electronic instrumentation, and materials testing. Facilities also include equipment dealing with precision measurements, manufacturing processes, digital controls, and automatic control systems. Small classes The ratio of students to faculty in our department is small (22 students per faculty) resulting in small classes and ensuring close interactions with faculty. Dedicated leadership Our strongly student-oriented faculty are involved in mechanical engineering research, creating opportunities for students to participate. Work experience By participating in our summer intern program or in our co-op program, students gain practical work experience in an area related to mechanical engineering. Work experience allows students to sample the work environment before graduation, and help them finance college cost; it also gives them a strong advantage when they seek permanent employment. Interns have a single work assignment and typically complete the degree in four years. Co-op students alternate periods of school with periods of employment and usually complete the degree in five years. View more details on Miami University - Oxford, OH .
