Photography from Massachusetts College of Art and Design is a Campus Master Photography degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. The MassArt Photography Program teaches photography as a medium of self-expression with an emphasis on personal vision, experimentation, and an understanding of the history of photography and the body of criticism that surrounds it. Visiting artists are an integral part of the program, and the department has a strong visiting artists and critics lecture series, including critics such as Andy Grundberg and Doug Nickel; and artists such as Livia Corona, Penelope Umbrico, Katy Grannan, James Casebere, Kim Yasuda, Rebecca Solnit, Lois Conner, Linda Connor, Peter Garfield, Joan Fontecuberta, Ed Grazda, Jim Dow, Gary Schneider, Neeta Madahar, Justine Kurland, Tim Davis, Thomas Roma, Laurel Nakadate, Jason Fulford, Larry Sultan, William Christenberry, Gregory Crewdson, Elinor Carucci, Jem Southam, and Alec Soth. The photography Major Studio provides a rigorous weekly forum for discussion. Laura McPhee and Abelardo Morell lead the Major Studio. Graduate students may also select adjunct advisors from among MassArt faculty or from artists or critics outside the school to review their work on an ongoing basis. In addition to Major Studio and adjunct advisor critiques, visits by prominent photographers, critics and curators provide an opportunity for feedback on student work. Other visitors have included Vik Muniz, Charlotte Cotton, Gary Schneider, Tim Davis, Mitch Epstein, Justine Kurland, Shellburne Thurber, William Christenberry, Gregory Crewdson, P. L. DiCorcia, Susan Meiselas, Luc Sante and Sandra Phillips. State-of-the-art facilities include MFA darkrooms, a non-silver darkroom, individual studio spaces, a graduate digital facility, color and large format printers, and one of the only Polaroid 20x24-inch cameras in the United States.
