Tailored for adults who seek to work with a select group of dedicated peers in a challenging and supportive environment, the program will prepare students for advancing their careers and/or for applying to competitive MFA programs at MICA and other colleges and universities. The program provides intensive immersion in the language and practice of graphic design , and it is designed for professionals and graduates from non-design fields, including liberal arts, fine arts, journalism, architecture, communications, and photography. The program also seeks applicants who studied design as undergraduates yet desire a more comprehensive and rigorous education in the visual language of graphic design . A portfolio review is required for admission. Students completing the program will receive a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate . Students enroll in the following courses each semester: one 6-credit GD PBac Studio, two 3-credit graduate or undergraduate studio courses, and one 3-credit Technical Workshop (15 credits each semester; 30 credits total). Although full-time study is recommended, a part-time track is available to meet the needs of working adults. The GD PBac Studio provides an intensive introduction to basic design, taught with a strong emphasis on professional practices and portfolio development. Students meet weekly with faculty for individual and group instruction. Students are encouraged to participate in the larger graduate and undergraduate design culture at MICA through elective coursework and visiting lectures. The 3-credit Technical Workshop provides students with intensive software training. Students with strong software skills may choose to place out of the Technical Workshop and take a studio or liberal arts elective in its place. The GD PBac program is housed on the fourth floor of MICA's Fox Building on Mt. Royal Avenue, in a newly renovated, fully-equipped loft-style studio space. Full-time students have dedicated desk space and computer stations. Part-time students have use of table or cubicle space, bringing their own laptops for work and instruction. All students have access to color printing and a production area. The GD PBac Studio is conveniently located in relation to graduate and undergraduate programs in graphic design and illustration. The program is led by a full-time faculty member with a strong background in teaching and professional work. The Faculty Leader teaches the GD PBac studio as well as other graduate and undergraduate courses.
