Purpose The program prepares certified teachers to understand the field of LD as it relates to general education issues and practices as well as other exceptionalities in special education from inception to current practice. Candidates learn to effectively administer, interpret, and report formal and informal assessments to accurately identify disabilities and current levels of performance. Candidates also learn to develop and employ researchbased instructional strategies to address individual needs in all school learning environments. Course work and field experiences emphasize consultation and collaboration with parents and allied service providers in light of inclusion and transition planning. The MAT in LD provides a comprehensive program of study to address the needs of students with LD so that they may reach their fullest potential in an academic setting. The Master of Arts in Teaching with a specialty in learning disabilities is a rigorous program designed for teachers who possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate. Teachers who successfully complete the program are well prepared for the state proficiency test in the area of learning disabilities and eligible for K-12 endorsement in LD. Candidates may opt for the LD endorsement alone or incorporate it into a master's degree .
