The program content includes communication and interpersonal skills, legal and ethical responsibilities, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, aseptic techniques, patient care procedures, surgical technology procedures, patient safety, use and care of equipment and supplies, employability skills, and basic computer literacy. In a simulated surgical environment, students practice preparing, setting up and maintaining a sterile field, sterilization and disinfection procedures, preparation of supplies and equipment for surgery, and patient preparation. Clinical learning experiences in an operating room and related areas are an integral part of this program. PROGRAM OUTCOMES After successfully completing the program, the student will be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of and apply wellness and disease concepts. Use communication and interpersonal skills as related to surgical technology . Demonstrate an understanding of math, basic sciences, and computer skills related to surgical technology. Describe and practice safety measures in the surgical environment. Perform patient care procedures related to the surgical environment and describe methods for meeting patients' needs. Demonstrate knowledge of the skills necessary to function safely and effectively. Demonstrate knowledge of and assist with surgical procedures. Demonstrate an understanding of legal and ethical responsibilities specific to surgical technology . Recognize and respond to emergency situations. Demonstrate employability skills.
