Practical Nursing from Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology is a Campus Certificate Nursing Practice degree that prepares you for a Nursing career. This program is designed to prepare students for employment as licensed practical nurses. Graduates will be prepared to take the NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing) to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. This 1350 hour program is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing and includes theoretical instruction as well as clinical experience in medical, surgical, obstetric, pediatric and geriatric nursing. Students receive theoretic instruction as well as clinical experience in both acute and long term care situations. The first 165 instructional hours include the Health Science CORE (OCPA) and articulated nursing assistant (OCPB). PROGRAM OUTCOMES After successfully completing the program, the student will be able to: Demonstrate computer literacy as related to nursing functions. Use appropriate verbal and written communications in the performance of nursing functions. Demonstrate legal and ethical responsibilities specific to the nursing profession. Describe human growth and development. Perform aseptic techniques. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Perform physical comfort and safety functions. Provide personal patient care. Perform nursing procedures. Administer medication. Apply principles of nutrition. Provide care for medical/surgical/oncological patients, utilizing the nursing principles. Provide care for maternal/newborn patients, utilizing nursing principles. Provide care for maternal/newborn/pediatric/geriatric patients, utilizing the nursing process. Apply the principles of infection control, utilizing nursing principles. Provide care for pre-operative and post-operative patients using nursing principles. Provide bio-psycho-social support. Develop organizational skills. Demonstrate employment skills specific to practical nursing . CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) eligibility after completing first 165 hours.
