Learning to use performance as a method for fostering and understanding human communication; 4. Increasing one's ability to give informed and precise evaluations of artistic performance from around the world; 5. Developing a greater sensitivity to aesthetic texts, recognizing their distinct forms and characteristics, crediting the author with his/her signature. Our approach to the stage ultimately teaches students to draw connections between the performing and visual arts and social and cultural history. Performance that is community-based and indigenous inevitably raises issues crucial to a discussion of cultural identity and humanity. Proscenium-based, commercial theatre may inherit the sociological and the political motivation of community theatre but oftentimes, can be seen as the expression of a single individual theatre-mind, theatre company, and theatre house. Training the young performance scholar in the history of avant-garde theatre , via the study of individually motivated and envisioned performance styles, emphasizes the importance of critiquing and evaluating the stage on aesthetic grounds. Thus, the message of the individual voice may be contrasted against the community, heightening awareness and sensitivity to artistic nuances. Theoretical classes in performance studies train students to study contemporaneous and historical theories and to apply these theories to theatre by using them to direct and act. Crucial to practical experience is writing one's own performance text and, later, evaluating classmates' performance. The directorial and stage tenure helps students to make intellectual and imaginative connections that links art and theory.
