Becoming a Medical Radiographer A medical radiographer--also known as a radiologic technologist--is responsible for the accurate demonstration of body structures on an image receptor, such as x-ray/radiographic film or a digital imaging monitor. The technologist determines proper exposure factors, manipulates medical imaging equipment, evaluates the radiographic image for quality, and provides for patient protection and comfort. The radiologic technologist frequently assists the radiologist in specialized procedures. These procedures often require the administration of contrast agents or the use of fluoroscopy for enhanced viewing. Purpose of Medical Radiography Program The Medical Radiography Program within the School of Allied Health Professions seeks to support Loma Linda University's mission of "To Make Man Whole" by providing a well-rounded educational experience for its students. Upon completion of all the academic and clinical requirements, the student receives an associate in science degree in medical radiography and is eligible to take both the state (CRT) and national (ARRT) board exams. The Curriculum The AS in Medical Radiography is a 21-month program. Student involvement during the program is 40 hours a week, mainly during regular daytime hours. The first quarter of the program provides students with the basic principles and procedures of diagnostic radiography. Some courses include web-enhanced learning methods. The following six quarters are divided between academic instruction and intensive clinical experience at local hospitals. Coursework for CT is now added to the AS curricula, so that when students complete the program, they would be able to sit for CT boards upon completing additional competencies.
