Sign Language Interpreter from Lansing Community College is a Campus Certificate Sign Language degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. A Sign Language Interpreter is a person specially trained to facilitate communication between the Deaf, DeafBlind, hard of hearing, and hearing communities. Employment opportunities may be educational settings, freelance or contracted with agencies to provide interpreter services for deaf persons. Entrance to the Interpreter Program is granted by passing a screening implemented by the Sign Language/Interpreter Program. State of Michigan PA 204 of 2007 states that interpreters must possess certification in order to be employed. State credentials are available through the Division on Deafness & Hard of Hearing in the Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth for the State of Michigan. In addition to the State of Michigan credentials, graduates may also consider taking the Education Interpreters Performance Assessment (EIPA) or National Interpreter Certification (NIC). Not all courses in this program transfer to all colleges. Students planning to transfer should see an academic advisor or counselor before enrolling in any course.
