General Description The Kent State University Department of History offers a variety of options for students seeking an M.A. in history: traditional history (thesis options with and without course work in a cognate discipline and a non-thesis option); public history (thesis and non-thesis option); and a concentration in history for practicing teachers that combines graduate-level content work in history with pedagogy and allows for a professionally oriented project. All M.A. students regardless of their major program area hone their skills in critical reading/thinking, discussion, primary source analysis, and analytical writing. The core of the M.A. program, regardless of concentration, consists of reading colloquia and writing seminars. All students also complete required courses in historiography and historical research methods.
