Students complete the concentration as Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) and may choose between an Adult or Child/Adolescent focus. The CNS in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing possesses proficiency in psychotherapeutic skills including individual, family, group psychotherapy and consultation, as well as advanced knowledge about psychopharmacology, mental health assessment, and diagnosis. The CNS practices within three spheres of influence: patient/family, nurse/interdisciplinary team, and organizational (National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists). The CNS role includes teaching, research, supervision, case management, practice, and also administration. (American Nurses Credentialing Center).
