Special Education from Jackson State University is a Campus Bachelor Special Education degree that prepares you for a Education career. The mission of the Department of Special Education is twofold: (1)To provide specialized training, experiences, and knowledge based upon the wide constructs, principles, and dispositions that support the teaching of exceptional learners; (2)To train competent field practitioners skilled in working with individuals with various disabilities toward a goal of reaching maximum personal, social, and vocational growth. The training of teachers and disabilities personnel adheres to national standards established by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). The Responsive Educator Model (REM) is used by the Department to insure quality of programming and to support the goals of the College of Education and Human Development. OBJECTIVES The objectives of the Department are: To prepare personnel for staffing special education and disabilities services positions in schools, and other related human resource agencies. To offer a comprehensive curriculum that incorporates a variety of experiences including campus-based experiences (micro-teaching clinics, case studies, computer-assisted instruction, as well as field-based experiences?student teaching, internships, tutoring, etc.). To facilitate student development by broadening the knowledge base in which the curriculum is based by attending conferences, workshops, seminars and participating in collaborative activities with other community agencies (public schools, human resource agencies, etc.). To enhance students' ability to work with the diverse handicapped and culturally diverse populations through selected research, teaching , and field-based experiences. To accommodate students from various ethnic backgrounds, exceptionalities, and handicapping conditions through an open, multicultural approach to Special Education personnel preparation. STUDENT OUTCOME MEASURES Students trained through the Responsive Educator Framework (REF) are intended to become: Teachers and administrators of special education prepared to teach in school districts, institutions and other related agencies which work with students with special needs. Teachers who are specialized in helping students by using adaptive technologies. Rehabilitation personnel that service clients who are in need of supportive services and equipment, in non-school environments. Disabilities personnel who will ultimately become administrators in the rehabilitation system. Teachers and rehabilitation personnel trained in distance learning technologies.
