Paramedic Science from Iowa Lakes Community College is a Campus Certificate Medical Emergency degree that prepares you for a Healthcare career. Paramedic Science is designed for daytime, evening/weekend students who desire a career in out-of-hospital emergency medicine. Through a comprehensive program of theory, clinical and field internship, the student will develop the skills for an entry level basic or advanced emergency medical provider. The program adheres to all current standards established by the US Department of Transportation and the State of Iowa, using the National Standard Curriculum. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be eligible to take the National Registry practical and written examinations. The certificate degree is a one-semester program and when successfully completed, the student is eligible to take the boards to become a national certified EMT-Basic. Upon certification you have two options, the route you choose is up to you. Remain an EMT-B. Complete the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree which is five additional semesters of advanced theory, clinical/field internship and become eligible to take the boards to become a national certified Paramedic. There is a demand for all levels of EMS in the State and around the country. Graduates may obtain employment or volunteer with public or private agencies employing emergency medical personnel or continue their education at a four-year college or university using their knowledge for employment while continuing in the healthcare profession.
