This fact, coupled with dramatic social and economic changes in recent years, leads to the importance of understanding what is necessary to provide quality early childhood care and education . Students have the opportunity to transfer to a university or seek employment in the Early Childhood field. This program offers the student to take a variety of coursework as well as be involved in field experiences in early childhood settings. Students gain a basic understanding of child development, child health, safety and nutrition, curriculum planning as well as broaden their background in general education and develop an awareness of current issues in the profession and administration processes. Students learn a variety of skills including observing, recording and guiding behavior; first aid; CPR; planning, preparing and presenting developmentally appropriate curriculum; advocating for early childhood issues; and administering early childhood programs. Students will complete a professional resource file, a personal portfolio, and a card file of appropriate children's activities throughout this program. This program may be completed in two years or more depending upon student ability and/or personal situation. To advance in the program course sequence or to graduate, a student may have no grade lower than 'C' in any Early Childhood Education (ECE) course or in course EDU-235. Upon successful completion of this program, students will be granted an Associate in Science Degree . By completing the Early Childhood Education Program, graduates can be employed in a position of responsibility such as a lead teacher or program coordinator working with primary grade children, preschoolers, and infants/toddlers. Sites could include a public or private school, child care center, preschool, Head Start, AEA, family day care home, resource & referral center, family/community service agency, recreation center or residential home.
