Program Format: Campus Program Level: Bachelor

Ceramics from Indiana Wesleyan University is a Campus Bachelor Ceramic degree that prepares you for a Art and Design career. If your idea of going to class involves rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty, you're in luck. If you thrive on creating beauty and utility out of a formless mass, you've come to the right place. This is the Ceramics major at Indiana Wesleyan University . Here, at the potter's wheel, you'll watch your own art take shape before your eyes even as you see your life take shape under the steady guiding hand of God. The Ceramics major is an exciting and dynamic discipline, taught by professors with decades of experience. In a way that's unlike many arts , ceramics deals with aesthetics well as form and function to create unique objects for everyday use. In a world where so many things are mass-produced, there is still a place for the one-of-a-kind. That's where you come in. Get fired up in our new facilities Whatever your mind can conceive here, you can build here. Our facilities are exceptional for both sculptural and functional purposes. An indoor kiln room houses four electric kilns. The large Bailey gas kiln is perfect for firing stoneware such as dinnerware and other functional ceramics. The raku kiln is designed for the more decorative pieces of art. An additional outdoor kiln shed near the ceramics workroom protects you and your work from the elements when it's time to fire up. The ceramics facility also includes separate areas for glaze mixing, clay mixing and hand working, as well as slab rollers for constructing pottery in a hand building process, and of course, pottery wheels. Make the studio your campus home While you're a student at IWU, the ceramics facility is your studio. You belong here. And before long, you'll learn how to actually operate the entire ceramics facility, from firing the kiln to mixing your own clay. So when you move on to your next ceramics facility, you'll know exactly what to do. As a Ceramics major at IWU, you'll spend a semester learning hand building and a semester learning to use the potter's wheel. You'll learn to make sets of dinnerware (think bowls, glasses, teapots, covered dishes) so all the forms are the same, but you'll also master sculptural forms that are purely decorative. Travel the length of your imagination Looking for a little more scope for your imagination? Consider spending a semester at the Australia Studies Center through the Wesley Institute for Ministry & the Arts based outside of Sydney. From there, you'll travel to New Zealand and the Pacific Rim on some not-so-typical field trips into a land you'll never forget. By the end of your college experience at IWU, you'll have quite a collection of ceramics to display during your Senior Exhibit, representing the best work of your four years. After graduation, you can choose to develop your own studio, work for a small company that produces handmade pottery, or teach your love of ceramics to other budding artists. Depend on the hand of the Potter At Indiana Wesleyan University, you are invited to be clay in the hands of the potter, to use the illustration found in the Old Testament book of Jeremiah. All the same, as you search for your individual ceramic style, feel free to break the mold if necessary. View more details on Indiana Wesleyan University .
