Ultimately, students interested in the MAS master's program usually have the long-term goal to enhance their current professional skill-set in media arts, while gaining the additional benefit of enhancing their careers. Program Emphasis Rather than emphasizing any particular media area or type of technology, the MAS master's program supports an approach that covers a range of integrated media forms through several core courses. Because we recognize the critical relationship between theory and practice at the graduate level of study, students will also learn the principles and practices of new media design and development. Upon completing the core courses, students will immediately focus on their specialization area through a course selection that matches their particular interests. Specialization Areas include 1. Integrated Media (Web / 2D Animation / Video Production), 2. 3D Animation / Gaming), or 3. Customized: Including any combination of MAS courses with courses from Human-Computer Interaction, Health Informatics, and/or Bioinformatics. As outlined above, best-practice plays an important role in the MAS master's program. Although theory is integrated into course lectures, an emphasis on media application in real-world scenarios is present. With this emphasis, projects are developed based on the student's area of specialization. Critical to the process, the Final Project (discussed below) will demonstrate a form of sophistication in its conceptual, problem-centered, and technical levels. The MAS graduate project will explore a current topic, usually centered around an existing problem-space related to media arts and science and of interest to the student and/or their advisor. The final MAS project should demonstrate a mastery of critical thinking and knowledge, as explored through any range of solutions that is both functionally sound and human-centered.
