The Indiana University School of Informatics launched the Informatics Doctoral Program, offering a Ph.D. in informatics. As the first of its kind in the country, the School was created as a place where innovative multidisciplinary programs could thrive, offering programs where students could apply information theory and technology to a range of other fields. This interdisciplinary approach continues in the Informatics Doctoral Program in related areas such as Bioinformatics, Health Informatics, and Human-Computer Interaction. Students in the doctoral program explore the connections among technology, theory, social analysis, and application domains in a diverse and multidisciplinary curriculum. This curriculum includes core courses and seminars in informatics; an informatics sub-discipline (the current sub-disciplines are bioinformatics, health informatics, and human-computer interaction, and more are in development); courses in methodology and theory; electives in related disciplines inside and outside of the School leading to a Ph.D. Minor; and a dissertation. Areas of Research Specialization Because HCI is a multidisciplinary discipline, students are encourage to expand the scope of their research to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries into such areas as user-centered design, cross-cultural theory and application, related areas within new media such as gaming and virtual reality, computer-mediated communication, usability engineering, computer supported cooperative work, health informatics, information visualization, biomedical informatics, android science, social robotics , sensorimotor representation, symbol grounding and symbol emergence, and computational neuroscience, and so on. It is also important to note that faculty research projects often involve representatives from several different research areas working together to develop innovative and even revolutionary solutions. While students can expect to concentrate in particular areas, they will also be expected to explore the broader significance of their work as well as ways that their expertise can be leveraged to solve problems outside of their own domains. Graduates of this program are expected to enter academic positions in research and teaching universities or to conduct research for industries that use informatics that includes HCI-related knowledge. They should be able to shape the direction of information technology in the scholarly work they do on the social, organizational, and design environment of technologies, as well as in designing solutions for the issues confronting the biological, chemical and health-based scientific communities.
