You'll be trained to anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazards and to develop hazard control methods, procedures, and programs. Some of the classes you'll take are Introduction to Occupational Safety and Health, Hazardous Materials, Fire Protection, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Ergonomics, Human Physiology and Anatomy, Physics, and Human Behavior in Organizations. You'll also be required to take an internship your senior year. The Cooperative Education Program offered by the Safety Sciences Department gives you the opportunity to work with safety professionals in industry. This is a full-time program that lasts a minimum of twelve weeks; in it, the student is paid (an average of $10-$15 per hour) as an employee. What You'll Become The Bachelor of Science degree in Safety Sciences will prepare you for employment as a Safety, Health and Environmental Professional. Safety Sciences is a very broad profession that includes occupational safety, occupational health, environmental safety , fire protection, ergonomics, systems safety, emergency planning and response, and safety management. The coursework also will prepare you for entry into graduate school. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, good job opportunities are expected for those who handle dangerous materials.
