One of six bachelor's degree options in Physics at IUP, this major is similar to the Bachelor of Arts in Physics degree but requires two major courses not needed for the B.A. degree: one in thermal and statistical physics and the other in optics. Also, by comparison, the B.A. degree requires additional classes in the Natural or Social Sciences, while the B.S. degree adds a math course and another physics course. While at IUP, Physics majors in the B.S degree program take courses in electromagnetism, mechanics, statistical mechanics, electronics, quantum mechanics, and solid state and/or nuclear physics. According to an American Institute of Physics report on the initial employment areas of those with bachelors' degree in physics in 2003 and 2004, 56 percent were employed in the private sector, 14 percent in high schools, 12 percent in colleges and universities, and 7 percent in the active military.
