The master's program in health promotion prepares students to serve as health educators or health promotion specialists in educational, clinical, occupational, and community settings. Our courses stay abreast of trends, issues, research, and initiatives in health education. Students will take courses in measurement and evaluation in health education as well as research design. Degree Requirements The Master of Science in Health Promotion requires the completion of a minimum of 35 credit hours. In addition to core and required course work, you will select two courses among a variety of options from the courses offered in the Department of Applied Health Science. Students can also choose to do independent studies in the topic of interest. The Health Promotion program offers a Travel Study class. The class involves an overseas field study trip to China and Thailand, in which students learn firsthand about the health care systems, health challenges, and cultures of China and Thailand by visiting hospitals, universities, schools, and community health centers. Job Outlook and Salaries Career opportunities abound for graduates with an M.S. in Health Promotion. In a 2005 survey of Applied Health Science alumni, 88 percent of master's degree alumni reported attaining full-time employment within six months of completing their degree or internship. Based on May 2006 data, the U.S. Department of Labor reported the average income for health educators was $40,360. Recent graduates of the program are working in positions such as health promotion coordinator, health and fitness program manager, school health coordinator, sexual health coordinator, and study coordinator for an international lung cancer study.
