The Clinical Laboratory Assistant program, which consists of both classroom and clinical education, is designed to prepare you to work as a laboratory professional who collects blood specimens, assesses and prepares the specimens for analysis, prepares analytical reagents and controls, performs instrument maintenance, inventories reagents and supplies, loads specimens onto laboratory analyzers, and performs testing appropriate for the clinical assistant level (such as waived and/or point-of-care testing), and other duties. The program graduate will be eligible to take the ASCP Board of Certification's national professional certification examination, and will be able to work in a variety of clinical settings that include hospital laboratories, physicians' offices, and clinics. The clinical laboratory assistant can help ease the critical shortage of staff in clinical laboratories by being able to perform some of the initial tasks in analyzing patient specimens or to perform waived testing.
