History from Illinois State University is a Campus Bachelor History degree that prepares you for a Liberal Arts career. The History Major consists of 36 hours. Students enrolled in the History Major must take the introductory United States History sequence (HIS 135 and HIS 136), the introductory European History sequence (HIS 101 and HIS 102), Doing History (HIS 200) and the Senior Seminar (HIS 300). Each student must have 18 hours of History electives. Fifteen hours must be in upper division courses (200 or 300 level). Of the senior hours, six hours must be at the 300 level. For their last elective, students must choose HIS 111, HIS 112, HIS 131, or HIS 104. If students choose HIS 104, they may also use it for their Outer Core-Humanities in General Education. (Of the 18 elective hours, six must be non-western.) Doing History is an introduction to the discipline and should be taken by native students no later than the second semester of their sophomore year and by transfer students no later than the first semester of their junior year. HIS 200 is a pre-requisite for all other 200 and 300 level history courses. Students enrolled in the Teacher Education sequence in History are, in fact, History Majors. Therefore, they must meet all the requirements listed above for History Majors. In addition, students in the History-Social Sciences Education Teacher sequence must complete the teaching methods sequence (HIS 290 and HIS 390) and must have a minimum of nine hours in U.S. History. Students must also complete a 16 hour interdisciplinary area, which includes the following: Economics 105, Politics and Government 101, 105, or 106, Geography 135 or 140, Sociology 106 or 108, and Anthropology 175 or 185. An additional 24 hours in Professional Education must be completed as part of the entitlement program leading to secondary certification. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in History must complete 12 hours of credit in a foreign language (LAN 111, LAN 112, LAN 115). As LAN 111 and 112 (the equivalent of three full years of high school foreign language) are required by the College of Arts and Sciences for graduation, LAN 115 is one class beyond the graduation requirement. Students may use LAN 115 to meet their Middle Core-Quantitative Reasoning requirement for General Education. A Minor is recommended for students (History non-teaching sequence) seeking the B.A.; however, those choosing not to pursue a minor must complete a 9-hour concentration in an area other than History and Foreign Language, with at least three hours at the upper-division level. Students seeking a Bachelor of Science in History must complete a minor in an area other than History or Foreign Language. In addition, students must complete one extra Science, Math & Technology class beyond the Associate's Degree or General Education. There is a specific list of classes that count toward the B.S.-SMT in your catalog in the "Degree Requirements" section.
