Description: The Paramedic program is designed for individuals interested in providing care to patients in the pre-hospital setting at the advanced life-support level. The program will provide participants with opportunities to gain information, skills and attitudes necessary for certification and practice as paramedics in the state of Kansas. It addresses the information currently considered to be the responsibility of the paramedic according to the Department of Transportation Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) National Standard Curriculum, 3rd edition. Admission process: English Composition IA (or equivilent), EMT, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Intermediate Algebra or Applied Algebra II, all at the college level, must be completed with a grade of "C" or better prior to admission to the paramedic program. Equivalence of prerequisites are determined by admission committee. An application must be submitted to begin eligibility for admission to the paramedic program. A personal resume must accompany the application. An admission committee makes the final selection according to a completion of the following: A. The results of an interview using questions relative to the specific areas calling for a recommendation. B. The results of a written examination focused at the EMT level. A score of at least 75 percent is required for admission. C. Records or documents of the applicant's past performance as a student and employee. D. The capability of the student to be placed within a paramedic position upon graduation. A comprehensive exam to include reading comprehension level, mathematical skills, learning style, social interaction, stress level profile and test taking skills may be given. E. Any factors which show the student may be an unwilling or unsuitable participant. F. Applications received by May 1 of each year will be given preference. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Program enrollment is limited to 20. After the notification of admission is received, a physical examination by a physician and proof of immunization are required before attending the program.
