Each of these areas includes a variety of related occupations as well. Students devote approximately 70 percent of time to shop work for hands-on learning and 30 percent to related theory. They also do small jobs throughout the school for actual first-hand knowledge of the trade. A graduate of the Metalworking Occupations program should be able to: Demonstrate technical skills that meet quality work standards and safety in the metalworking industry. Demonstrate proper care, use and storage of tools, equipment and materials. Integrate scientific knowledge when observing, assessing or performing basic metalworking tasks in the shop or industry setting. Be proficient in the basic language and communication skills of the metalworking trades. Understand the characteristics of metals , types and styles of metal cutting tools, cutting feeds and speeds and heat treatment of metals . Read prints and drawings; demonstrate measuring and layout techniques. Operate computerized machine tools. Perform brazing, arc, resistance and gas welding operations. Perform wire feed and shielded arc welding (MIG, TIG) Cut, bend and form sheetmetal Demonstrate industrial safety in the shop and on the job site and good housekeeping practices.
