Upon completion of the program students will have the skills to pursue: entry-level job in the trade, apprenticeship program, trade or technical school, or two-year or four-year college program. Since we live in a constantly changing technological world, emphasis is placed upon basic skills, which will not readily become outdated, and problem-solving techniques which will be meaningful in adapting to newer technological processes. Students gain learning experiences through classroom and hands-on work. Graduates of the Horticulture/Floriculture should be able to: Relate basic knowledge of botany and horticulture soils to plant growth and culture. Demonstrate the use of soil amendments, fertilizers and plant growth-control chemicals and keep appropriate records. Identify ground covers and various annuals, biennials and perennials by botanical and common names and describe their outstanding characteristics, landscape use and applications. Identify deciduous trees and shrubs, narrow and broad-leaved evergreens, their cultivars and varieties by botanical and common names and describe their distinguishing characteristics, landscape use and applications. Produce greenhouse crops to harvest and sell; operate greenhouse environmental systems for commercial production. Prepare salable floral designs of fresh, dried and permanent flowers, using design guidelines and working within the time and cost requirements of the retail floral industry. Operate, repair and maintain lawn and farm equipment. Demonstrate principles of flower shop/garden center operation and management.
